Is Chiropractic Right for Me?
“How do I know if chiropractic is right for me?” is a common question for people considering chiropractic care for the first time. If you’re considering chiropractic care, you may be wondering whether it is actually appropriate for you. Maybe you’re dealing with pain or stiffness. Perhaps an old injury continues to bother you, or you’ve noticed changes in your mobility or ability to do the things you enjoy. You may simply want to understand why something doesn’t feel or move the way it should.
The answer shouldn’t come from a sales pitch. It should come from an appropriate evaluation of you.
It Starts With Understanding the Problem
Chiropractic care commonly focuses on problems involving the musculoskeletal system—the joints, muscles, and other tissues that help your body move. Chiropractors may evaluate and manage conditions involving the spine as well as other areas such as the shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, feet, elbows, wrists, and jaw.
But having pain or stiffness doesn’t automatically mean that chiropractic treatment is the right choice.
Different conditions can produce similar symptoms. That is why a careful history and examination are important before deciding how to proceed.
Your Examination Helps Guide the Decision
At Quality Care Chiropractic, we begin by listening to what brought you into the office and learning about your health history, symptoms, activities, previous injuries, and goals.
We then perform a chiropractic examination based on your individual presentation. Depending on what we find, this may include evaluating areas such as posture, movement, joint function, muscle function, balance, coordination, orthopedic findings, and aspects of neurological function.
The purpose isn’t simply to find something to adjust. It is to gather enough information to make a reasonable clinical decision about what may be contributing to your problem and whether chiropractic care is appropriate.
Sometimes the Right Answer Is Something Other Than Chiropractic Care
Good healthcare also means recognizing when a patient needs something different.
If your history or examination suggests that chiropractic treatment may not be appropriate—or that additional evaluation, imaging, or another healthcare professional should be involved—we will discuss that with you.
In some situations, chiropractic care may be one part of managing a problem. In others, another type of care may be more appropriate.
That distinction matters.
Our goal is not to convince every person who walks through the door that chiropractic is will “fix everything.” Our goal is to determine whether the care we provide is a reasonable option for the problem in front of us.
Care Should Be Individualized
When chiropractic care is appropriate, treatment should reflect the individual rather than follow an identical routine for everyone.
Your examination findings, comfort level, health history, goals, and response to care can all influence how treatment is delivered. That may include chiropractic adjustments, treatment of appropriate extremity joints, soft-tissue techniques, therapeutic exercises, or other services when clinically indicated.
We also continue to evaluate how you are responding. Improvement in pain can certainly matter, but so can changes in mobility, function, activity tolerance, and your ability to return to the things that are important to you.
So, Is Chiropractic Care Right for You?
You don’t have to figure out whether chiropractic care is right for you on your own before making an appointment.
That is one of the purposes of the examination.
If you have a musculoskeletal concern, pain, stiffness, restricted movement, or another problem you think chiropractic care might help, we can evaluate your situation, explain what we find, and discuss your options with you.
When chiropractic care appears appropriate, we’ll explain why and develop a treatment approach based on your findings. If we believe another type of evaluation or care would be more appropriate, we’ll tell you that too.
